The lydian
mode is built from the fourth degree of a major scale.
It works well over major7 chords, and was often used by Frank Zappa,
and occasionally by Trey Anastasio and Jerry Garcia.

What's in it:
The mixolydian mode is just
like a major scale, except with #4 degree (B natural
instead of Bb in the example above).
Over major 7 chords, especially maj7#11 chords (common
in jazz).
When the chord progression goes from I major to II major (for
example, C to D, or A to B)
Almost any time a chord progression is in a major key, but also
contains a major chord a whole step up, on the II degree
(for example, an A chord in a song that's in the key of G).
