Golgi Apparatus
By Trey Anastasio
As performed by Phish on the album Junta (1988)
Transcribed by Paul Murin
Golgi Apparatus
is one of the classic Phish tunes, and it contains many elements that
are seen frequently in Trey's composition style--especially the device
of taking the same exact lick/melody through several different keys.
Compared to many tunes from this same album, Golgi is relatively uncomplicated...but,
to quote John from the Dark Star Orchestra, it still contains enough
licks in it to make 5 Grateful Dead songs.
Performance
Notes:
-
Section A (the first verse)
is played with a general funk/blues rhythm over a G7 chord.
-
The third line of this
transcription is just the guitar lick that goes over the verse
after the line "They call him lysasome 'cause he runs so
fast...". I'm actually unsure that this is the exact lick
(what Trey plays here sounds more chromatic to my ears), but it
goes by fast enough that it works for me.
-
The instrumental section
at letters D and E are the parts where you take the exact same
lick and move it around the neck. D2 is the same thing as D, but
2 frets higher. Then, at section E, the same lick moves down two
frets for a total of four times through. If you are familiar with
the song, you should know what I mean here (I didn't tab the whole
thing out in order to save space).
